Chapter 3, Prologue

Even if the light of the moon is obstructed by thick clouds, I will never lose my way.

 

My feet will not be captured by darkness, nor will I embrace fear.

 

Because I have you, my light.

Most are fast asleep at this hour.

Like a wall, thick clouds swallow up the stars, and the weak light of the moon is but a blur. Without any light reaching the surface, the land was dyed in darkness, as if it were smeared with ink.

The cold winds feel painful on the skin as they attempt to steal the warmth of the living. It was enough to cause bodies to shake furiously, and colored one’s breath white.

In the dark night, where all living creatures were gone from sight, there stood a tall man.

 

「We received a notice. It looks like the Lichtein Dukedom surrendered.」

 

There was the presence of two other people in the vicinity of the man.

One of them…

 

「Then can’t we suggest fighting together…?」

 

Had a piercing cold voice like frozen soil.

 

「And I thought they would put up a bit of a fight… Turns out they weren’t anything special.」

 

There’s a disappointed sigh, to which the tall man directs a sharp gaze that slices through the darkness.

 

「We didn’t need the Lichtein Dukedom for our plans to begin with. We were just going to use them if they put up a good fight. This won’t be a problem. Weren’t you the one that said all that?」

「But it’s also true that I was hoping for them to hold out until we made our move.」

「So, what do we do? You’re not going to tell me you want to give up after all this, right? We don’t have any time left to delay this.」

「Don’t worry. Something of this level won’t affect our plans. The Grand Empire finally began to show some instability. We can’t possibly let this chance slip by. This is something we’ve been anxiously awaiting— for the thousand year grudge against the central continent to overflow.」

 

There’s a cheerful spring to their voice as they continue.

 

「The Lichtein Dukedom will depend on the details, but the disorder in Ferzen will probably continue for a while. We have to set out before the Grand Empire gets accustomed to it.」

「Then do we execute the plan?」

「We can start at anytime. We will spread the 「poison*」 and destroy the Grand Empire. Once we do, our victory will be assured— This is getting fun.」

TL note: same poison used to make the monster in chapter 26 volume 1.

「Don’t take this lightly. Our opponent is the Grand Empire. We don’t know what might happen.」

「Nothing will happen— We won’t allow it. Okay, I’ll be turning in first.」

 

One presence disappears, and the tall man speaks to his remaining comrade.

 

「You don’t forget, either.」

「…」

「I’m counting on you.」

 

He could sense nodding. Satisfied with that, the tall man disappeared.

The person who was silent from beginning to end…

 

「No matter what the outcome may be… there’s no change in the fact that the land will be dyed red.」

 

Left with those as his final words. With no more traces of any living creature, only the roaring of the freezing winds remained.
